The Nebraska climate challenge
Living in eastern Nebraska means high summer humidity, freezing winter snows and sudden temperature swings. On exteriors, freeze-thaw cycles cause wood and masonry to expand and contract, and standard or poorly prepped paint will crack, peel and chalk quickly. Inside, winter heating creates dry air while summer brings moisture, which affects adhesion in bathrooms, basements and kitchens.
Prep beats premium paint every time
You can buy the most expensive bucket of paint on the market, but without proper surface preparation it will not hold up. Before a single drop goes on the wall, the job requires thorough power washing and scraping of failing exterior paint, caulking expansion joints and sealing seams against moisture, and sanding, priming and repairing drywall or trim for maximum adhesion.
Choosing the right product for the job
Not all paints are equal, and the right coating depends on the surface it is going on.
- Exterior siding and trim: 100 percent acrylic latex with flex technology. The elasticity lets the film expand and contract through winter freezes and summer heat without cracking.
- Kitchen and bathroom cabinets: urethane alkyd enamel or cabinet grade lacquer, for a hard, factory smooth shell that resists moisture, cooking oils and daily hand contact.
- Garage and basement floors: a concrete floor sealer. It keeps dirt, grime, water and oil out of the slab and makes the floor far easier to clean, which is what most people actually want when they ask about a garage floor coating.
- High traffic interior walls: eggshell or satin in a low VOC acrylic, durable and easy to wipe clean while keeping indoor air quality good through the months when windows stay shut.
